1/23/09 Immunity Unit notes

Today in class we:
●Continued the notes on the immune system. (6/pg BW) We began with slide 40, the lymphatic system. We then discussed active immunity, including vaccinations. We discussed primary and secondary immune responses. We went on to discuss passive immunity. Then we discussed homeostatic disorders: allergies, autoimmune disorders, and finished with slide 52, AIDS.
●Handed out the worksheet for the next unit, How Cells Divide.

· We will do a lab simulation of the spread of an infectious disease. We discussed nephron structure and function. We discussed the different structures of the urinary system. We talked about how the kidneys filter, reabsorb and then secrete materials between the blood and nephron to concentrate the urine. We reviewed osmosis and how it is useful in the kidneys. We discussed how the kidneys function to maintain concentrations in body fluids and help control blood pressure. We discussed homeostatic disorders related to the excretory system.

1/12/09 Excretion notes and Nervous & Endocrine test

Today in class we:
· Took student questions about the Nervous and Endocrine unit. We discussed function of the different parts of the brain.
· Continued the discussion of the Excretory system and water balance. We began discussing nephron function. We then discussed how the urine collects in the ureters and passes to the bladder. Then the urine is passed out of the body via the urethra. We discussed the processing steps of filtration, reabsorbtion and secretion. We discussed how the kidneys aid in balancing the fluid composition of the body and how blood pressure and pH are regulated. We reviewed osmosis and finished on slide #42.
· Handed out the review packet for the next unit, The Immune System.
Coming up:
· Unit test on nervous & endocrine system the week of 1/12/09. Currently scheduled for Tuesday.
· We will review the test.

This second video begins the urinary system and begins information on the nephron.

Today in class we:
· The lab report on Innate vs learned Behavior was collected.
· Continued the discussion of the Excretory system and water balance unit. We began discussing how waste products are formed; CO2, water, nitrogenous wastes and mineral salts. We continued with the excretory function of the lungs, skin, liver and large intestine. Then we began discussion of the urinary system, beginning with the gross structure of the kidneys and proceeding to details of nephron function. We finished with Slide #27, the nephron.
Coming up:
· Any questions on the Nervous and Endocrine unit.
· Continue with the Excretory system and water balance.
· Unit test on nervous & endocrine system the week of 1/12/09. Currently scheduled for Tuesday.

Happy New Year
We will be back in a few days. This is a link to a site with a very good set of notes on the material that we are doing. While there is some that is beyond what we are doing, the majority is what you need to know for our class.
